Berowra roofing between the ridge and Berowra Creek

Berowra sits high on the ridge with the highway and the railway, and the land falls away west toward Berowra Creek and the waters below. Berowra Valley National Park runs down that side of the suburb; Ku-ring-gai Chase holds the east. The bushland that Council describes as running from Pennant Hills all the way to Berowra Waters effectively wraps the place.

Steep blocks, long drops

A lot of Berowra houses are single-storey at the street and two or three levels at the back, stepping down the slope. For roofing that changes the economics of nearly every job:

• Access and safe working takes longer to set up than on a flat block
• A tarp in an emergency needs somewhere to anchor, and that is not always obvious
• Gutter work on the downhill elevation is a height job, not a ladder job
• Stormwater has to get away from the footings on ground that is already shedding water

None of it is unusual here. It does mean a quote that ignores access is a quote that will change later, and ours does not work that way.

Leaf load and fire detail together

The canopy is dense and the litter load is continuous, so gutters and valleys here need both regular clearing and a guard that suits fine eucalypt litter. On land mapped as bushfire prone — and much of the suburb is, on mapping certified by the NSW Rural Fire Service — that guard must also be non-combustible under AS 3959, along with full sarking and sealed roof-to-wall junctions.

Roof types

Mostly later twentieth-century brick with concrete tile, plenty of metal on additions and carports, and a scattering of fibro-era cottages. Tile roofs of this vintage usually restore well rather than needing replacement — the roof restoration page sets out what that involves.
