Gutter Repair & Replacement

Gutters and leaf guard for homes under heavy canopy

Gutter repair, replacement and non-combustible leaf guard across Hornsby and the Upper North Shore. Built for constant eucalypt litter and ember risk.

Gutters are where the Upper North Shore punishes a house. You can have a perfectly sound roof and still get water into the eaves, rust along the fascia and a stain down the brickwork, simply because the gutters have been carrying a wet mat of eucalypt litter for a couple of years.

We repair, replace and leaf-guard gutters right across Hornsby and the northern suburbs. Free inspection, written quote. (02) 9000 1127.

What a permanently full gutter does

It is not just overflow. A loaded gutter:

  • Holds water against the back of the steel, so corrosion starts on the hidden side where no one sees it until a hole appears.
  • Rots the fascia and soffit behind it, which turns a gutter job into a carpentry job.
  • Backs water up under the tile overhang, into the eaves lining and down the cavity.
  • Weighs a surprising amount, pulling brackets loose and destroying the fall.
  • Feeds the valley problem, because litter that cannot clear the gutter builds back up the roof.
  • Carries ember fuel right along the roof edge on bushfire-prone blocks.

The last point is the one people underestimate up here.

Repairs we do most

  • Replacing rusted, holed or split sections of gutter.
  • Re-levelling runs that have lost their fall and now pond.
  • Rebracketing gutters that have pulled away from the fascia.
  • Repairing or replacing fascia and barge timber found rotten behind a failed gutter.
  • Replacing undersized or blocked downpipes and reconnecting to the stormwater line.
  • Clearing and flushing the whole system so what we have fixed actually drains.
  • Repairing box gutters and sumps, which are common on the older Federation houses through Beecroft and Wahroonga and which have no tolerance for a blockage.

Leaf guard that is specified for gum trees

Most disappointing gutter guard installations are disappointing for the same reasons: the aperture is too coarse for fine eucalypt litter, the guard is laid flat so debris sits on it, or it is clipped on in a way that lifts in wind.

What works under a real canopy is a fine-aperture mesh, pitched so litter sheds, fixed properly at both the gutter and the roof end, and continued through the valleys rather than stopping at the gutter line. Valleys are where the serious water damage starts, so a guard that ignores them is doing half a job.

On bushfire-prone land the material choice is not optional. Non-combustible mesh with a fine aperture is what AS 3959 contemplates, and it also happens to be the product that actually performs under stringybarks. One decision, two benefits.

Steep blocks and where the water goes

A lot of properties through Hornsby Heights, Berowra and Mount Colah sit on land that falls away sharply. Getting water off the roof is only half the task; getting it away from the footings and into a legal discharge point is the other half.

Undersized downpipes, a single outlet trying to drain a long run, and stormwater lines blocked by the same leaf litter are all common. We check the downpipes and the outlets as part of the gutter inspection rather than treating them as someone else's problem.

Out on the acreage at Arcadia and Fiddletown the gutter is also the tank inlet, which raises the stakes on both cleanliness and first-flush arrangements.

Choosing a replacement profile

Quad and squareline gutters in coated steel cover most houses here. The things worth thinking about are capacity for the roof area draining into them, the colour against the fascia and roof, and compatibility of metals so you are not creating a corrosion cell between gutter, bracket and downpipe. Near the water at Brooklyn that compatibility question becomes the main question.

What it costs

Gutter work is priced on the length of the run, the height and access, how much of the fascia is sound, and whether guard is included. A single-storey run you can reach from a ladder is straightforward. A two-storey elevation over a sloping garden needs more setup, and that is where most of the cost difference lives.

The inspection is free, the quote is written and itemised, and completed work carries a written workmanship warranty. The roofing contractors carrying it out are licensed and insured and work to NSW Fair Trading requirements.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

We had leaf guard installed a few years ago and the gutters still filled. What went wrong?

Usually the product, the pitch or the install. Wide-aperture mesh lets fine eucalypt litter straight through, and a flat guard that sits level becomes a shelf that holds a wet mat on top instead of letting it blow off. Under stringybarks you need a fine aperture, a slope that sheds, and secure fixing at the tile or sheet end. Done properly it reduces clearing frequency; nothing removes it entirely.

Does gutter guard on bushfire-prone land have to be metal?

On land mapped as bushfire prone and assessed under AS 3959, gutter and valley guards must be non-combustible if they are installed at all, with a fine mesh aperture so embers cannot pass. That rules out the common plastic clip-in products. Hornsby Shire's bushfire prone land mapping is certified by the NSW Rural Fire Service, and we check your address against it before quoting the guard.

Water is running behind the gutter and down the wall. Is that a gutter fault or a roof fault?

Nine times out of ten it is the back of the gutter, the fascia or the tile overhang rather than the gutter itself. Water backs up over the internal lip because the gutter is full, the fall is wrong, or the tiles do not project far enough into it. Replacing the gutter without correcting the fall or the overhang just relocates the problem, so the inspection looks at all three.

How often should gutters be cleared on an Upper North Shore block?

Twice a year is the working minimum where there are gums over the house, and three times is sensible on a block in Hornsby Heights, Berowra or Westleigh backing onto reserve. The autumn and late-spring clears matter most. If you also have a rainwater tank, clearing before the heavy-rain season keeps the first flush usable rather than full of tannin and grit.

Can you replace just one bad section rather than the whole run?

Often, yes, and we will quote it that way where it is genuinely the right fix. The catch is that gutters usually fail from the same cause along the whole length, so patching one corroded corner on a twenty-year-old run can mean another callout next season. We will give you both options with the reasoning so you are choosing, not guessing.
